The Moka Pot is a small stovetop brewer that's been a kitchen staple in Latin American and Italian homes for decades. It brews a strong, bold coffee similar in intensity to espresso — without needing any special equipment, just your stove. It comes in two parts that screw together, and once you've made it once, you'll never forget how.
How to Make It:
You'll need: 2–3 tablespoons / 20g of finely ground coffee | Fill the bottom chamber with hot water up to the safety valve — roughly ½ cup / 100ml for a 3-cup Moka Pot
- Unscrew the Moka Pot and fill the bottom part with hot water up to the small metal safety valve on the side — not above it.
- Place the small metal basket on top of the bottom chamber and fill it with finely ground coffee. Level it off gently with your finger — do not press it down.
- Screw the top and bottom together firmly so there are no gaps.
- Place it on your stove over medium-low heat and leave the lid open so you can watch.
- After a few minutes, you'll hear the coffee bubbling and gurgling into the top chamber — that means it's almost done.
- As soon as the gurgling gets louder and the coffee looks bubbly and lighter in color, take it off the heat immediately. Close the lid and serve.
Tip: Starting with hot water instead of cold speeds things up and helps avoid a burnt taste in your coffee.
